Our Story

Our Story

It all started a long, long time ago. Well, November 2021. When the creator of this show was commissioned to write a New Musical, that was to be performed live on radio. Being a Christmas special, he soon hit on the idea of writing about the most special Christmas – the one that started it all.

12 songs and an ‘unusual’ concept for a show, later… it was time to cast the production. But the shows concept… sorry, the shows ‘unusual’ concept posed somewhat of a headache. It dictated that holding normal auditions wouldn’t suffice.

It’s probably a good time to explain the show’s concept and why this posed a unique issue regarding the casting. The rehearsals were to be recorded and broadcast to the world, warts and all. Which takes some bravery and trust from the actors, and the show itself would be fluid, any actor could find themselves, once the show had started, playing any part, and on the spot given a character trait or some business/motivation to go with that role.

In a normal show – you’d look at each part in the play and then try to find actors who fit those roles. For this show, they weren’t looking for actors to play a role, but for actors who could play all the roles… and were expert improvisers… and had enough experience to make the rehearsals entertaining… Oh, and the show was a comedy – so the actors also needed to be well versed in making people laugh.

It seemed a tall order. But armed with this criteria, an amazing cast, full of experience and laughs – was booked to do the radio show. If you want to know about the cast:

The radio show was extremely popular. The station repeated the entire show and the rehearsals. It must have gone down well, as straight away the team were asked to make another new Musical, this time for Christmas 2022.

After requests for the 2021 Radio show to be released as an album, it dropped in May 2022. With decent sales, the discussion moved onto whether the actors wanted to tour the show…

The actors loved making and performing this show – I think part of the reason it resonates so well with audiences is the joy the actors have for the show and working with each other. Argh… I should have started this paragraph with the words ‘Spoiler Alert’ – but the cat is out of the bag… so to answer the question, yes, the actors wanted to tour the show.

The show’s deviser thought the show should be rewritten as a Children’s Show. Which now seems like an obvious idea, but at the time felt like a real ‘out of the box’ thought. Would the cast go for it? Spoiler Alert – look at this website, of course they did. It was an amazing idea. The original radio show had been written for an adult audience. It wasn’t wildly inappropriate; it just wasn’t written for Children to enjoy. Now it has been written for children to enjoy. We think this show is the best Children’s Christmas Show there is, bar none. Thanks for reading this far down… Wow… I am impressed… I mean, even I didn’t read all of this, and I wrote it… I’ve been wearing a blindfold while typing. For your extreme dedication, if you do book a show for your venue – let us know that you read all the ‘our story’ page – and for your dedication, we’ll try to get one of the cast to bring you a jam doughnut. Yeah, the show is for the kids… the doughnut is for you…

This year book the most fun and best Children’s Christmas Show ever.
